Smarter Production Systems

SURTECO Australia: circular manufacturing in action

Sustainability in manufacturing is no longer measured simply by using recycled materials. Increasingly, the focus has shifted towards circular manufacturing, an approach that keeps valuable resources in use for as long as possible by reducing waste, reusing materials and designing manufacturing processes that minimise environmental impact.

For Australian manufacturers, circular manufacturing is becoming both an environmental responsibility and a competitive advantage. By recovering production waste, incorporating recycled materials and reducing reliance on virgin resources, manufacturers can lower waste, improve efficiency and create more sustainable products without compromising quality.

At SURTECO Australia, these principles are embedded into the manufacturing process.

As Australia’s only local manufacturer of ABS edgebanding, SURTECO Australia has invested in production systems that maximise material efficiency while maintaining the premium quality expected by the furniture, joinery and cabinet making industries.

Approximately 70 per cent of production waste generated during the manufacturing process is recovered and reused within the business. Rather than being discarded, this material is reintroduced into production, reducing the demand for new raw materials and significantly lowering manufacturing waste. The remaining material is supplied to another Australian plastics manufacturer, where it becomes raw material for new products instead of ending up in landfill.

This circular approach extends to the products themselves. ABS is a highly durable and recyclable thermoplastic, making it well suited to a circular manufacturing model. Its long service life helps extend the lifespan of finished furniture, while its recyclability supports more sustainable resource management at the end of its use.

The environmental benefits extend beyond waste reduction. Local manufacturing reduces transport distances compared with imported products, helping lower associated emissions while supporting Australian jobs, skills and manufacturing capability. Producing edgebanding domestically also allows SURTECO Australia to respond quickly to customer requirements, reducing unnecessary inventory and improving production efficiency.

Sustainability does not come at the expense of design. SURTECO combines its Australian manufacturing capability with more than 130 years of global expertise in decorative surfaces and design development. The result is a comprehensive range of edgebands, decorative surfaces and coordinated finishes that allow manufacturers to achieve seamless, high-quality furniture designs while selecting responsibly produced products.

Innovation also plays a critical role in the company’s circular manufacturing strategy. Continuous investment in manufacturing technologies and production processes enables SURTECO Australia to improve material utilisation, maintain consistent product quality and identify new opportunities to reduce waste throughout the manufacturing cycle. These ongoing improvements ensure environmental performance continues to evolve alongside product performance.

As manufacturers across Australia look for practical ways to reduce their environmental footprint, circular manufacturing is an essential part of the conversation. Recovering materials, minimising waste and designing products with longevity in mind are no longer niche initiatives; they are standard expectations.

By combining local manufacturing, recyclable materials and closed-loop production practices, SURTECO Australia demonstrates that sustainability and premium manufacturing can work hand-in-hand.
