Staron gets a new lease on life!
Staron offcuts and broken pieces have been cleverly reworked and repurposed to create a stunning bread knife, chopping board and coasters thanks to the efforts of Cascie and Sean from Little Bread Winner.
Cascie started Little Bread Winner with the goal to achieve two outcomes: to create products that reduce the excessive amount of commercial waste ending up in landfill and to create a bread knife that would effortlessly cut a slice of fresh, crusty sourdough. Through her efforts, Cascie collects all sorts of materials including solid surface, timber, glass and even buttons in her mission to re-use as many products as possible.
The Little Bread Winner Bread Saw is precise, practical and beautiful to use. Handmade in Brisbane using locally-sourced materials, these bread knives are safer and more comfortable to use than a traditional bread knife. Each saw is individually handcrafted, making every piece unique.
Cascie reaches out to all kinds of local businesses as she sources waste materials and offcuts that would otherwise go to landfill and this is how the relationship with Austaron came about: a shipment of Staron Ocean View became damaged in transit to site. Some of the larger pieces were able to be salvaged but the medium and small pieces were taken by Cascie and Sean, while the smallest pieces were donated to the NDIS who run Men’s Shed sessions.
As Cascie says, “life’s too short for bad bread slices” and this new relationship is another positive outcome from Austaron Surfaces in assisting to divert building waste from landfill.
